Why did you decide to become a sponsor of the IAPTI First International Conference?

Lucy: I was delighted to hear that IAPTI’s First International Conference was to be held in London in support of interpreters in the UK who have been treated so shabbily by the new framework agreement which came into force last year. Although not an interpreter myself, I have supported my interpreter colleagues throughout the campaign against this unjust agreement.

Unfortunately I shall not be able to attend the conference in person due to travel arrangements already made, but I shall be there in spirit.

How important is it, in your opinion, for translators and interpreters to engage in CPD?

Lucy: If language professionals do not undertake professional development, they run the risk of never advancing their careers in any way. CPD widens one’s outlook, and gives language professionals the ambition and confidence to extend their careers and avoid working always for the same customers at the same prices and in the same areas of translation.

The project from hell is a presentation on one of the most challenging projects ever in the world of game translation, and therefore an interesting case scenario for both developers and translators. During this presentation, we will break every single rule for localization and do whatever it takes to come up with a less-than-optimal product.

Today we’re featuring a short Q&A with Rose Newell who will be speaking about “Translation agencies: debunked and exposed“.

Thank you for agreeing to present at the upcoming IAPTI First International Conference, Rose! We’re delighted to have you as a speaker. In your presentation, you’ll be debunking and exposing translation agencies. Why this topic?

Rose: In short: because I believe some things need to be said. The intention of the title is to be a little provocative, perhaps even confrontational towards those agencies engaging in practices that are undermining our industry and damaging their clients (and therefore the economy as a whole). By no means are all agencies in need of debunking and exposure – but I think the good guys are often just as unaware of the poor practices of their contemporaries as translators are. However, for translators, telling the good and bad guys apart is getting harder – and it goes beyond paying good rates and paying on time. It moves into the (criminal) realms of deception and misrepresentation. Open discussion of these matters among students, experienced professionals and honest translation companies is long overdue.

How will the attendees benefit from your presentation?

Rose: Attendees will hopefully enjoy the ‘wall of shame’ pin board, where they will have the chance to share their (anonymised!) experiences and benefits from those of their colleagues. This ‘wall of shame’ and the talk itself should make it easier for translators to put their finger on that funny feeling, build on their confidence to say NO and give them an understanding of why NO must be said.

Which presentations are you planning to listen to yourself?

Rose: All of them? They all look quite interesting! From a business perspective, I am probably most intrigued by Nick Rosenthal’s talk (“Customer service: What we can learn from other industries”) or that of João Roque Dias (“The Golden Triangle: Translator; Client, and Money”). The ethics-themed talks from our keynote speaker Mona Baker and Emmanuël Hazé are also badly needed in our profession, so I am curious what they have to say.

What would you say to somebody who’s considering registering for the conference?

Rose: Do it! It is your chance to hear a wide range of talks and meet interesting colleagues from all over the world. No translator is an island, after all – even if we decided to hold a conference on one.

What else are you planning to do in London?

I plan to see Macbeth at the Globe with some colleagues just after the conference. London has a great history and a lot of culture to experience, including many free museums and exhibitions. I am British, of course, and though I have never lived in London, it has become a welcome landing pad for all my visits to the UK since my decision to avoid plane travel in 2008. There’s no place like home.

Why did you decide to take part in the First IAPTI International Conference?

Paula: I consider IAPTI one of the best Associations for our profession and I am considering applying to be a member. This is going to be my first contact with it and, because so many friends and colleagues are already members I decided to attend. Also, because the Conference is really well organized and has really good speakers…

Désirée: There were different reasons. First, I finally made up my mind and followed the saying to visit as many conferences and seminars as possible to learn new things and meet colleagues – and to network. This will be the start. Second, I am visiting a friend of mine who moved from Hong Kong to London end of June and we’ll surely have a great time, too. Third reason is finally meeting with Marta Stelmaszak, Rose Newell, and some other in person. The fourth reason is that I was longing to see London again and having some kind of vacation after four years.

What are you looking forward to the most?

Paula: Great sessions, revisiting London (a city I really love) and see some friends. Make new ones, of course, is also a goal!

Désirée: My main interests are the workshops/speeches of Rose Newell, Valeria Aliperta, Marta Stelmaszak, John Bowdler, Attila Piróth, Oliver Lawrence, and Loek van Kooten. I wonder how I will be able to get most of these talks – being aware I may have to skip some due to the fact I cannot have a clone of myself to attend all those.

Apart from the Conference, what are you planning to do in London?

Paula: Visit new places and revisit other ones… I really love London and have some friends there as well.

Désirée: My cultural plans are paying “The Shard” and the “British Museum” a visit. These are a MUST on my list. A nice Korean dinner is a ‘hopefully yes’ on my action list. I know, I shall avoid Charing Cross Road with its lovely bookshops one beside the other!!! To have some tea/coffee apart from the Conference with fellow colleagues as mentioned above is also a I am looking forward to it on my socializing plan. In 2004 I have enjoyed a play at The Globe which I must skip this time. But I can fully recommend it to all who are not yet sure if to go or not! A wonderful experience awaits you there!
