*Water Tribunal of the plain of Valencia – September 27, Thursday
Contact us nearer the time if you want to join us for this free activity on Thursday! (spainconference@iapti.org)
A UNESCO site of Intangible Heritage of Humanity, the Valencia Water Court is a traditional common-law body that has survived over the centuries and is still part of the Spanish judicial system. It has helped maintain the vast, complex system of irrigation channels used for Valencia’s fertile plains, built in Andalusí times (9th-13th Century).
It carries out its jurisdictional duty by holding a public hearing every Thursday at midday outside the Apostles’ Gate of Valencia’s Cathedral. Made up of democratically elected farmers, this court settles disputes orally, quickly, cheaply, publicly and impartially. Perhaps we could use the system more widely today!
