Promoting ethical professional practices since 2009, IAPTI offers translators and interpreters a unique opportunity to get together, share knowledge and network while enjoying good food and company. In addition to listening to inspiring presentations, you can meet fellow translators and interpreters from all around the world at an IAPTI networking event—and who knows—maybe come up with a project idea over coffee!

This year, IAPTI is coming to the ancient city of Bursa in Türkiye. Wait, isn’t it Turkey? Also, which Turkey came first: the bird or the country? Well, the Thanksgiving staple “wild turkey” indigenous to Mexico bears a striking resemblance to the East African turkey that was brought to Europe by the Turks of the Ottoman Empire. Therefore, it was named “the turkey-hen”. Moreover, it is called “hindi” (literally “from India”) in Turkish, “d´inde” (rooster of India) in French, “Peru bird” in Portuguese, and “Dutch chicken” in Malay. As you can see, it is named after the country exporting it. Since Turkey has decided to officially change its name from Turkey to Türkiye in a recent campaign, we call the bird “turkey”, and the country Türkiye now.

But enough of the bird talk; let’s go back to Bursa, our IAPTI 2024 host! The first capital of the Ottoman Empire sits against the backdrop of the mighty Uludağ mountain (literally translated as the “mighty mountain”—humble, much?). It is soaked in the rich history of the Ottoman Empire, while boasting types of kebap you have never heard of, and much more! Our thought-provoking seminars will be held on the mountainside campus of Bursa Technical University, where you will be welcomed by Translation and Interpreting students and professionals.

So, mark 28–29 September 2024 in your calendars to share knowledge and network while enjoying great food and scenery in Bursa, Türkiye!
