The QMT Project is a research study on the quality of medical translations, based on the original 2012 publication by Yana Onikiychuk, Ekaterina Chashnikova and Artem Karateev: “Medical Translation: A Retrospective Study on the Quality of Medical Translation Produced by Translators With and Without a Medical Background”.
Starting from the question: “Who is better at medical translation: a linguist or a medical doctor or another person with a medical background?”, I will present a summary of the rather surprising results of the study and announce the launch of its second phase, which I have joined as a co-author. A consideration of the possibility of extrapolating these results to other translation specialties is also included.
This second phase (encouraged by articles such as La medición de la calidad de una traducción: comentarios sobre un estudio, by José De La Riva) includes a survey and interviews with medical translation experts on the quality of medical translation carried out by translators with and without a medical background. We intend to carry on with the study by gathering a large sample of medical translations qualifying the endpoints of the study, and communicating the results of our project worldwide.
This second phase was presented by Ekaterina Chashnikova in Kiev last May and in 2013 it will also be presented in Toledo (Spain: http://www.asetrad.org/congreso-x/), Freiburg (Germany: http://trikonf.com/) and San Antonio (Texas, USA: http://www.atanet.org/conf/2013/) (The last two cities are to be confirmed shortly).
