Remote Simultaneous Interpreting is a modality that has become very widespread these last few years. While its practice had been addressed previously, it would seem that many interpreters are isolated and trying to figure out the challenges it poses.

There are best practices recommendations that have already been published by professional associations and standards organizations which can be used by interpreters to guide their own practice and when working out contracts and explaining to clients what is necessary for this modality to work.

This presentation will share existing standards addressing RSI, standards that are in development, and position papers written by different groups addressing best practices that should be known and followed by all.

BIOGRAPHY

I am an interpreter, translator and terminologist. I have a Graduate Diploma in Translation and a Master’s in terminology. Currently, I mostly work as a freelance interpreter in the USA. I am a conference level interpreter with the United States Department of State, and also work in different federal and state courts. I am a producer and voting member in the F43 Committee of ASTM, working on drafting standards for translation and interpreting. During these recent times, I have collaborated in the work done studying best practices in RSI, and am currently working on the drafting team for the new ASTM standard on RSI.
