A Moses SMT "How To" For Translator (Tom Hoar)

Abstract: This 60-minute webinar is a first-hand look at what it takes to for translators to install, configure and run Moses SMT on their home or office computers without connecting to the "cloud." The session first reviews why "cloud" based Software as a Services (SaaS) became so popular after Moses SMT's release as an open source academic research project and how these "cloud" implementations have raised unanswered questions about intellectual property and privacy. After 7 years as an un-versioned academic research project, the Moses team released version 1.0 in Jan 2013. The webinar continues with a humorous comparison of the technology and market similarities between Moses 1.0 and Photoshop 1.0 when Photoshop was released in 1990. Tom explains what resources are necessary to run Moses and walks users through a demonstration of PTTools' DoMT Desktop application, the only Moses-based GUI desktop application designed for average translators. Finally, Tom shares what additional resources are available to translators who wish to learn more.
