Unfortunately, the bad players far outweigh the good, and pressure to reduce rates, accept poor payment practices and otherwise unacceptable behaviour is high.

Where other associations offer membership to both freelancers and agencies alike, the IAPTI differs. This will include listing, debunking and exposing the arguments and tactics used to convince clients they will get what they need, while ever-increasing their exploitation of naïve or desperate freelance translators.

The presenter especially hopes to provide a valuable warning to old, new and aspiring translators alike. Rose is known in the translation industry for her informative, opinionated and witty blog, “The Translator’s Teacup” (www.lingocode.com/translators-teacup), which contains articles on the translation business, quality in translation, technology and business ethics. One of her very first posts, “The Ethics of Proofreading”, led to widespread sharing (inc. plagiarism!) and its eventual publication in the ATA Chronicle. This success has been matched and multiplied by subsequent successful articles, including more recent successes such as “The Horrors of Proofreading” series.

Despite the title of her presentation, Rose does indeed enjoy very positive relationships with a number of quality-focused translation agencies, complementing her strong base of private clients in the IT, finance and marketing sectors.

Rose Newell, MITI (Member of the IAPTI, Head of the IAPTI’s German Chapter and Qualified…
