<\/div>www.theqmtproject.com<\/a> (beta version)<\/p>\n The QMT Project is a research study on the quality of medical translations, based on the original 2012 publication by Yana Onikiychuk, Ekaterina Chashnikova and Artem Karateev: \u201cMedical Translation: A Retrospective Study on the Quality of Medical Translation Produced by Translators With and Without a Medical Background\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n Starting from the question: \u201cWho is better at medical translation: a linguist or a medical doctor or another person with a medical background?\u201d, I will present a summary of the rather surprising results of the study and announce the launch of its second phase, which I have joined as a co-author. A consideration of the possibility of extrapolating these results to other translation specialties is also included.<\/p>\n This second phase (encouraged by articles such as La medici\u00f3n de la calidad de una traducci\u00f3n: comentarios sobre un estudio, by Jos\u00e9 De La Riva) includes a survey and interviews with medical translation experts on the quality of medical translation carried out by translators with and without a medical background. We intend to carry on with the study by gathering a large sample of medical translations qualifying the endpoints of the study, and communicating the results of our project worldwide.<\/p>\n This second phase was presented by Ekaterina Chashnikova in Kiev last May and in 2013 it will also be presented in Toledo (Spain: http:\/\/www.asetrad.org\/congreso-x\/<\/a>), Freiburg (Germany: http:\/\/trikonf.com\/<\/a>) and San Antonio (Texas, USA: http:\/\/www.atanet.org\/conf\/2013\/<\/a>) (The last two cities are to be confirmed shortly).<\/em><\/p>\n <\/div> Pablo Mug\u00fcerza is a Spanish medical translator with almost 30 years of translating experience, both in-house (McGraw-Hill) and freelance (most of the time). He qualified as a medical doctor in 1987 and, since then, has worked for the most important translation agencies in Spain, as well as most of the major pharmaceutical companies and contract research organisations. Pablo is an external translator for the WHO in Geneva, Switzerland. He is also a leading authority in the translation of clinical trial protocols EN>ES, and has published a very popular handbook on the subject. Last year, he led various workshops, courses and conferences \u2013in both English and Spanish, online and in person\u2013 in several countries, including a 3-hour seminar at the ATA 53rd Annual Conference in San Diego, California (in English).While translating medical texts full-time, Pablo is also a member of an international team working on quality in medical translation, an online teacher of medical translation and clinical trial protocol translation, and a speaker at various forums.
